When a Listing Looks Right, but isn’t
Tomi had only been in Lagos for a few days when she found the listing. The pictures were clean. The rooms looked good. The price seemed fair, and the property provider sounded confident. He said there had already been interest and that she needed to move quickly.
For a moment, Tomi felt relieved.
Then the inspection date changed. Extra costs appeared. Replies became slower whenever she asked direct questions. Each time she tried to get clarity, the answer returned to urgency: if she wanted the place, she had to act fast.
Tomi told herself not to overthink it. She had already spent time and money. She had already imagined herself living there. Like many renters who are tired, hopeful, and under pressure, she began filling in the missing pieces with trust.
But when the viewing was postponed again, something changed. The listing still looked good, but the experience around it no longer felt right. A genuine property should not become harder to understand every time a simple question is asked.
That is the difference many renters learn too late. Nice photos are not proof. A confident tone is not proof. Pressure is not proof.
What matters is clarity. Is the property truly available? Is the person authorised? Are the costs clear? Can basic questions be answered directly?
By the end of the week, Tomi realised the problem was not just one listing. It was how easily something can appear real before it has earned trust.
Stories like Tomi’s matter because they are not unusual. Many renters are not careless; they are trying to make decisions in a stressful process where urgency, hidden costs, and weak proof can make the wrong option look convincing.
A better rental experience starts with clearer proof, better questions, and less pressure to commit before the facts are in place.
